This new development creates a dynamic environment for multi-disciplinary collaboration among students. The Center is located on a midblock site at the heart of the Institute’s urban campus and plays a pivotal role in the campus plan. The building acts as a filter between the two sides of the extended campus—the quad and the city—and strengthens the pedestrian pike that links them.

The Concept to Construction Integrated Process behind the John W. Over Design Building Exhibition is up and will be on display at the UMass Amherst Design Building from September 10 – October 12. The exhibit will focus on the integration of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Mass Timber Structure from concept thru constrain.

The John W. Olver Design Building will be hosting an exhibit on the Design Building itself, the first Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) academic building in the US! The opening reception and lecture by Leers Weinzapfel Principal Tom Chung and Stimson Principal, Lauren Stimson will be held on September 10, 5:30-6:30pm

Leers Weinzapfel Architects along with BCH Integrated Services and Atelier Ten, will discuss the team’s integrated approach to sustainability through design,, construction and post-occupancy energy performance. This discussion will take place on September 18, 6:00PM – 8:00PM

College Planning & Management features the new Center for Engineering, Innovation and Sciences at Wentworth Institute of Technology in its Facility Focus of Makerspaces. The magazine notes that “The advancement of technologies for fabrication and the increased interest of educators of hands-on learning environments has prompted a proliferation of makerspaces in college and universities nationwide”.

Panel Presentation, “Mass Timber in the Midwest: Value + Distinction Through the Lens of Two Projects” will explore the multiple perspectives to building with Mass Timber. Tom will be discussing the construction and sustainable process behind the University of Arkansas Adohi Hall, recently built and ready for occupancy this fall. The Adohi Hall is the first Mass Timber Living and Learning space in the nation.

The Center for Engineering, Innovation, and Sciences provides a home for the next evolution in the collegiate study of multiple engineering disciplines. As the Institute’s program transitions from engineering technology to engineering and innovation, this four-story, 75,000-square-foot building comprises a dynamic environment for multi-disciplinary collaboration among students of biology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and two of its newest programs, biomedical engineering, and biological engineering.

The nation’s first large-scale mass timber residence hall project and living learning setting, Leers Weinzapfel is leading a design collaborative including Modus Studio (Fayetteville, AR), Mackey Mitchell Architects (St. Louis), and OLIN (Philadelphia), in the realization of this new campus gateway project. The 202,027-square-foot Stadium Drive Residence Halls will create a new residential college with emphasis on a creative live learn environment within a relaxed, informal, tree-lined landscape that re-conceptualizes university housing.
